ALBUM REVIEW
Another wonderful, obscure british pop sike gem, a sunny collection of songs stitched together with, in the best of late 60s psychedelic fashion, a trippy and surreal ?concept?- this time around, a journey designed for ?your very own rapturous mystification and spectromorphic iridescence? on the Rainbow Ffolly, a vessel of unknown nature (ship, airplane, both or neither?) with a jolly crew that turns out to actually be a rainbow (surreal and silly, but actually one of the more realistic late 60s album concepts if we think of the journey of Happiness Stan and the such). After we're welcomed to the journey with a pompous introduction by (perhaps) a band member, airplane take-off sounds and a short speech by a French flight attendant, the fun begins and we're presented with a wonderful collection of songs constructed from a diverse array of moods: a measure of cheerful, poppy fun (I'm So Happy, Drive My Car), a smattering of lazy, sun-soaked dreaminess (the aptly titled Sun Sing and Sun and Sand), a pinch of gentleness (Montgolfier, Goodbye) and, of course, the obligatory piece of outright silliness (Labour Exchange and the entertaining, strangely country-tinged They'm). All this adds up to a memorable experience and, in my humble opinion, one of the best obscure, hard-to-find late 60s psychedelic albums out there. (rateyourmusic)
