FAIBLESSE
MUSEA ECD2026 - FRANCE, 1999 |
|
Faiblesse had been for sure a quite solid debut by this band hailing from Grenoble but was on the other hand by far not as great and impressing as its follow-up. There aren’t any doubts about the talents and skills of these musicians and one can find here as well a few very good tracks but overall this record suffers of a lack of inspiration in a way. At times one could describe the blend of styles presented here as “Crimson meets Pearl Jam or Noir Desir” depending whether the vocals are in English or French language. Of course the music sounds much more sophisticated than any work of those two grunge/punk bands, it’s rather the voice of the singer (which isn’t really spectacular BTW) bringing that comparison into one’s mind. Strongest influence of this band seams to be Crimson and this fact is here much more obvious than on their second album “Ersatz”, especially in the opening title track which could easily be as well by Anglagard if there wouldn’t be the (sparse) French vocals. Though sounding highly derivative this one’s still one of the better tracks of this disk which is mainly dominated by the two guitarists whereas keyboards have been used more as an atmospheric background...Not essential, but maybe an interesting purchase for those who enjoyed already “Ersatz” but don’t expect a record that seduces to press immediately the replay button. SHOOTING ALBATROSS
ABEL MUSIC ECD7446 - UK, 2008 |
|
Since Abel Ganz started to make music in the Eighties their sound is considered as neo-prog (like contemporaries Marillion, IQ and Pendragon) but on this new album my musical impression is that the sound is a blend of Seventies inspired symphonic rock and folk music. The four long compositions (between 12 and 24 minutes) contain lots of shifting moods and a lush instrumentation like the use of the Indian sitar (electric version in Sheepish) and the Greek bouzouki (in Sheepish en Ventura). I enjoyed the contrast between the folky interludes featuring 12-string acoustic guitars, whistles, banjo, mandolin and flute (beautifully blended with instruments like the harpsichord, Mellotron or classical guitar) and the symphonic rock parts with electric guitar (fiery, wah-wah drenched in So Far and a strongly build-up, sensitive solo in Ventura) and vintage keyboards like the Fender Rhodes elektric piano, the Hammond organ, the Minimoog synthesizer and the unsurpassed Mellotron, I didn’t know that Abel Ganz was able to make such a captivating progrock! The vocals are handled by several singers, including Alan Reed (in the long track So Far), of Pallas fame but once he joined Abel Ganz. ALIENS ARE GOOD FOR SALE
LIZARD ECD5817 - SLOVAKIA, 2003 |
|
Third release for this Slovak band. Only bass, guitar and drums (but also synths' and piano's insertions) this time, but the same expressivity: free and intense. Free-progressive rock, high ability, but, above all, a great composition adding modern dynamic mood to the sincere rock, with inclination for art-rock and post-rock suggestions, but never trapped in the cage of a genre. EMILE JACOTEY
PHILIPS ECD4974 - FRANCE, 1975 |
|
Emile Jacotey was a return to their old form drawing back on their classic influences. In classic style this concept album runs like a continuous story full of harder and acoustic influences throughout. Songs are truely wonderful and full of mystical magic with some gorgeous analog keyboard runs and guitar/bass/drum interplay. In many ways this album carries very much like their debut album with perhaps less KING CRIMSON influences. This is an excellent album full of some grand musical moments. Of course all lyrics are sung in native French and are convincingly done so with great charisma and emotion. Also some scrumptious guitar playing here... (J.Unger-progarchives.com)

REVES PARTIES (2CD)
MUSEA ECD4408 - FRANCE, 2000 |
|
This live album unveils a concert performed on december 7th 1997 in Massy (Paris area), in order to promote the then very recent "Troisième Etoile A Gauche". Ten months later, the band was back together with the same enthusiasm in the city of Tours, and recorded the second part of this double-CD. And two years later, after the chrysalis completed its transformation, the butterfly took its flight on the Olympia stage in Paris. FRANTICODE
LIZARD ECD3844 - ITALY, 2008 |
|
| Instrumental project featuring a mixture of technical progressive and jazz fusion styles. This new band is a classic keyboards/guitar/bass/drums line up influenced by Planet X, Gordian
Knot, Spastic Ink, and many others, with lots of odd time signatures, unbeat times, dressy themes, fusion-style solos and arrangements recalling the familiar Allan Holdsworth, Tribal Tech, Chick Corea, and other jazz fusion repertoires. The production speaks for itself as it shows a great recording sound quality due to the amazing mix work of Derek Sherinian. THE AKALLABETH
AMS ECD7562 - ITALY, 2009 |
|
Behind the ARCHANGEL monicker hides Gabriele Manzini keyboard player and main writer for UBI MAIOR and former keyboard player for THE WATCH from 2000 till 2005. The Akallabeth is a concept album based on J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Fall of Numenor, a tale taken from The Silmarillion, the cosmological book of Tolkien's world. The music has been composed during the last couple of years and the lyrics are faithful to the original story. The twelve songs are perfect example of british classic-rock with many progressive-rock and hard-rock influences and some folk inputs. The CD features three important guest-stars: Damian Wilson, singer for many bands and artists of the prog-rock and prog-metal scene: Threshold, Ayreon, Rick Wakeman, Landmarq…Zachary Stevens, singer for the sympho-metal heroes Savatage from 1993 till 2000, and now frontman of Circle II Circle and Ted Leonard, singer for the prog-rock band Enchant from USA with many acclaimed albums. Beside these special guests there are other important singers and musicians from the italian progressiverock scene: Francesca “Elayne” Naccarelli (vocals, Dunwich), Walter Gorreri (bass, Ubi Maior), Alessandro Di Caprio (drums, Ubi Maior), Stefano Mancarella (guitars, Ubi Maior), Ettore Salati (guitars, ex-The Watch), Marco Schembri (bass, ex-The Watch), Davide Martinelli (drums, Darksky) and others. Released in jewel box with outer slipcase.

On this album, Area get closer to the sound on their debut album Arbeit Macht Frei. It's ethno-based jazzprog, very upbeat and varied. The production could have been better, but the material is really good and Stratos is on top of his game. ARS NOVA
MELLOW RECORDS ECD2815 - ITALY, 2002 |
|
Ars Nova was a Roman band who recorded these tracks between 1974 and 1979. It’s quite typical of the Italian symphonic progressive style of the time, very melodic, though the music is simpler than that of the top tier Italian bands. The recording is slightly muffled and not up to professional standards, but it’s quite listenable. So not an essential album, but certainly of interest to Italian prog lovers. Vocals in Italian. A PLANE VIEW OF THE BARRACUDAS
COLLECTABLES ECD7506 - USA, 1995 |
|
1967 saw the release of their sole LP - "A Plane View of the Barracudas". In terms of content the set offered up a then-standard mixture of R&B oriented material (the frat band required 'Gloria') and more conventional pop-rock (a nifty cover of The Byrds' 'Feel a Whole Lot Better'). To his credit Newton generously allowed the band to include two original songs - 'I Can't Believe' and 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' (two of the more impressive numbers). Musically most of the set was rather raw and rough, though enthusiastic performances such as 'I'm a Lover, not a Fighter', 'Not Fade Away' and an extended 'I'm a Man' (complete with some knock-your-socks-off fuzz leads), more than made up for other performance and production short comings. Among the few blatant missteps were a needless cover of Jr. Walker's 'Shot Gun' and a plodding take on The Beatles 'All My Lovin''. (rateyourmusic)

SLEEPING IN TRAFFIC: PART ONE
INSIDE OUT MUSIC ECD7518 - SWEDEN, 2007 |
|
The sound of Beardfish on their third CD is quite alternating and I am impressed by the tasteful arrangements, strong vocals and instrumental variety: the short intro On The Verge Of Sanity contains accordeon, then the next track Sunrise delivers good interplay between guitar and organ, an interlude with warm piano play and in my opinion the vocals are an extra instrument! The other seven tracks range from dreamy, swinging and bombastic to fluent rhythms and even blues like in Harmony featuring delicate work on guitar, organ and vocals. Very progressive/symphonic are the compositions The Ungodly Slob (fiery guitar, lush organ and a sensational synthesizer solo), Year Of The Knife (swinging with the sound of the clavinet, a biting guitar solo and suddenly in the final part a short violin solo) and Same Old Song (wonderful keyboards, varied guitar play and a compelling final part). ELEONORE
MUSEA ECD7432 - FRANCE, 2008 |
|
On a music adapted from a fairytale, "Eleonore Et Le Livre Interdit", written by the guitarist-vocalist Jérémie GRIMA, this opus takes you to a world of insistent melodies, splendid guitar surges and striking rhythms. The tracks are linked to each other, in a consistent set, where the story-telling, that may be read either in English or in French throught a CD-ROM track included here, is blended to a most sophisticated and expressive musical expression. Pushing to extremes what has become its distinctive mark, the band alternates, better than ever, heavy parts and very atmospheric passages. All that's left to do for the listener then is to get immersed in the marvellous world of Eleonore, the orphan girl seeking for the land were dreams come true. DISTORTIONS (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7558 - ITALY, 1971 |
|
First legitimate reissue with its original artwork for what is mostly considered the best instrumental psych record coming out of Italy. Entirely instrumental, Distortions was released in Italy in 1971, along with a single, and later released in other European countries, among which England, this time with a complete different artwork. Both album and single appeared in Italy on Vedette subsidiary Spider label, and were composed (under his nickname Tical) and played by Armando Sciascia. Following successful tours of Europe with his orchestra and an impressive series of recordings with Fonit Cetra, then Italy’s `preeminent record company, in the 1960s Armando Sciascia formed Vedette Records, his own independent record group based in Milan, which grew into an important classical, pop, jazz and ethnic repertory on various labels (Ars Nova, Vedette, Replica, Albatros, Zodiaco) which were soon distributed world-wide.

OUR BLUESBAG (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7557 - ITALY, 1970 |
|
An obscure band from Venice, but their only album, released in a very limited pressing, is among the rarest of Italian 70's progrock. It was also one of the first (or possibly THE first) LP's by an Italian band with a strong blues attitude, because blues was considered in Italy as a music only reserved to foreign musicians during the 60's. The band's leader, guitarist Claes Cornelius, was in fact a foreigner, from Denmark, that had moved to Italy in the mid-60's and soon played an important role in the beat era and afterwards. He had founded with sound engineer Ermanno Velludo the Suono Recording Studio. The album, Our blues bag, contains seven overall very good tracks, all sung in English much more in the best british style prog rock blues of the very first seventies than anything comparable coming from Italy.

APPUNTI PER UN' IDEA FISSA
VM 2000 ELP0471 - ITALY, 1972 |
|
Classical prog in a similar fashion to TRIADE, BANCO and Le ORME featuring Roberto Balocco (ex PANNA FREDDA) on drums and Red Canzian (guitars, vocals) who later would go on to play with both OSAGE TRIBE and POOH. The original Side 1 of this album is simply a prog masterpiece with their entire side long suite...a rearrangement of Beethoven's "Patetica". The remaining 5 songs explore a wide host of themes and moods with rich piano, organ and moog etched landscapes. Acoustic and electric guitar work is choice as is the bass and percussive contributions. CAPSICUM RED fuse delicate romantic passages with more aggressive classic 70's Ital-Prog influences. AL-BANDALUZ (2CD)
MUSEA ECD4665 - MEXICO, 2003 |
|
After the momentum achieved in their brilliant ‘Beyond Reality’ album, Mexican symphonic prog ensemble Cast had been approaching a crossroad that seemed to dangerously lead them to ceaseless self-repetition. Even though their posterior albums were all quite good, the prog magic apparently was starting to wane. Alfonso Vidales & co. came up with an excellent solution to their artistic predicament when they conceived the idea for “Al-bandaluz”, a proposal of refurbishment based on the incorporation of Flamenco-and-Arabic-oriented flavors into their own vintage symphonic bombast. This double CD is a manifestation of constant musical magic; it may be tiring to listen to this ambitious opus too often, but, the way I see it, each occasion in which you take your time to relax and enjoy the whole stuff comes with an ultimate reward at the end of the day. The typical elegance and melodic pomposity of Cast remains solid as a rock in a storm, but it is clear that the addition of new forms has influenced in the reshaping of the band’s core essence. The compositions and improvisations here presented by C.A.D. deal with the so-called “incidental music”: for instance music for theatre, interaction with text, or with art exhibitions, music for screen. Another characteristic of this research is improvisation, which is the guiding force behind any composition, even though some parts of it would appear more structured: starting with a general theme, the player may have a large scope for free interpretation and in this way become co-author of the piece. For further info visit the Official Homepage or see this video on YouTube, Rate Your Music

EVANESCENZE
MELLOW RECORDS ECD6899 - ITALY, 2005 |
|
This CD sounds far from original, complex or adventurous but I love the 24-carat symphonic rock sound on this album! Most of the compositions contain a pleasant climate featuring warm Italian vocals and wonderful work on the keyboards, evoking early IQ and Pendragon, mid-Genesis and Banco (also because of some vocal parts). The colouring of the songs is great delivering fat synthesizer flights, sensitive piano, organ waves or howling electric guitar. The climates often sound bombastic but also mellow or swinging, layered with great work on the keyboards and guitar, very compelling! (E.Neuteboom)

Again Doracor managed to make a compelling album that is inspired by mid-Genesis (like the track Dimensione 4) but this time less obviously than in the past. The compositions sound melodic and alternating featuring lots of howling guitar runs and pleasant work on keyboards (from soft choir-Mellotron waves and mellow Fender Rhodes piano to fat synthesizers). I also enjoyed the wide range of instruments like saxophone, vibraphone and violin like in the titletrack. The vocal parts are sung by a male and female singer, especially the song Il Giardino Di Peitra contains a great performance by Gianna Chilla, blended with biting electric guitar, very exciting! If you are up to compelling symphonic prog, this album is a tasteful and pleasant discovery. (E.Neuteboom)

MCM EGOFUTURISMO
MELLOW RECORDS ECD7498 - ITALY, 2008 |
|
Ego is the synthesis of a musical evolution, which has united three musicians, all active from many years with several experiences in the underground music scene. The passion for historical bands of the seventies, both foreign and, above all, Italian ( such as Orme, Goblin, Metamorfosi, PFM, etc..) together with the interest in many different musical genres has let us break down those fixed schemes, wich prevented us from freely expressing our souls. Such a consideration has made us layout our own way, conscious of what dealing with this genre nowadays means. The choice of a trio finds its roots in the strong friendship which links us. Moreover, the fact of playing many instruments has enriched our compositions, setting our souls free. As far as our philosophy is concerned , the decision of adopting only instruments ( which means no voice and no text leading the tracks) lets each listener accomplish a free interpretation of any compositions. | Many groups have mixed classical music with a contemporary style. In the late 60's early 70's a Dutch group named Ekseption did this under guidance of master keyboardist Rick van der Linden and had some successes in Europe with the '5th', 'Air', 'Sabre Dance' and 'Peace Planet'. Though this music is not for classical purists, it is excellent if you like late 60's rock with a jazzy flavor and some mellotron added to your classical assortment. (J-J.De Greef)

EQUILIBRIO VITAL (TRIBUTO A MARCOS CHACON)
MUSEA ECD4502 - VENEZUELA, 1983 |
|
This is the re-release of the first album by Equilibrio Vital, initially released in 1983, with some new songs added. Formed during the early-eighties, Equilibrio Vital recorded several albums, and still does, although the guitarist Marcos Chacon died in 2001 –which explains the album’s title. As Marcos said , music is the expression of “energy” “driven by feelings bursting from our inner self”. Equilibrio Vital’s first album is full of power, with even some heavy moments; male and female vocals, flute, sax, lively rythms and wild guitars, compose a sincere, enthusiast and suggestive music, full of positive vibrations and intensity. Highly recommended.

KAZMOR EL PRISIONERO
MUSEA ECD7182 - VENEZUELA, 1984 |
|
EQUILIBRIO VITAL is a Progressive rock band from Venezuela. Its first eponymous album was originally issued in 1983, and is now re-issued by Musea with some new tracks recorded between the year 2000 and 2003 as bonuses. With the name "Tributo A Marcos Chacon", different from the original one, the group wanted to pay tribute to its guitarist who died in 2001. EQUILIBRIO VITAL, who was the author of various other past albums, want now to keep on working. As Marcos CHACON used to say: "Music is the expression of an energy that comes from feelings that burst from deep inside.". The album that we are interested in here doesn't lack energy, and even becomes almost hard-rock at times ! The instrumental digressions of a LED ZEPPELIN seem to be an excellent comparison. Feminine and masculine vocals, flute, saxophone, lively rhythms and furious guitars create an authentic, warm and enthusiastic music that is full of positive vibes and expressive power. Recorded in the year 1984, the second album also includes several bonus tracks recorded today. "Kazmor El Prisionero" is a brilliant mix of Seventies Progressive rock, including lively flute parts ala JETHRO TULL, nice melodies ala CAMEL and a more powerful energy, sometimes near DEEP PURPLE.

I Racconti del Giullare Cantore is Fiaba’s 2005 studio album. This one restores some of the medieval/Mediterranean folk and fairy-tale qualities, with enough acoustic guitar to keep it interesting. This CD comes with a PAL DVD (all-region, 16:9 widescreen) containing a very professional video of the first track of the album, with elaborate sets and costumes and credits that go on nearly as long as the video. Fungus' first cd, "careful!" has been recorded in 2004 and released in 2006 by mellow records. At the present moment, fungus has just released a new promo cd: 25 grams (check it out!, free download from our site!!!) -recorded with new drummer, Stefano Firpo. QUANT'ALTRO
LIZARD ECD7300 - ITALY, 2007 |
|
Garamond's debut album is actually some sort of retrospective of their activity: the tracks date to 2001 and 2005. They are an ensemble from Ancona and their style is firmly rooted in the Italian "Rock In Opposition" tradition. The singer Laura Agostinelli's vocal research evidently reminds of Area's Demetrio Stratos, but is definitely more jocose, thus coming close to experimentation of Quintorigo's John De Leo. The whole album is extremely high-spirited indeed. The lyrics seem to reflect an Ou.Li.Po. aesthetics: they keep on switching among registers, from fairytalesque to nonsense, childish, aulic. The music behaves pretty much in the same way, ranging from chamber music to jazz, band music, electronica... The result is a very dynamic and fanciful work, maybe comparable to Picchio dal pozzo or Stormy Six: highly intricated, kaleidoscopic, but always very light. ELECTRODE
MUSEA GREAT WINDS ECD7435 - FRANCE, 2008 |
|
Roland GASSIN is a French guitarist from the French area known as Provence. His debut album, "Electrode" (2008) aims to be a highly energetic concentrate of jazz, rock and electro. Our man sings and plays most of the instruments, mostly guitars obviously, but also bass and keyboards. However, the eleven original tracks don't sound like a solitary musician's opus, and this is no surprise, as several musicians have collaborated with Roland GASSIN: a vocalist, a fretless bass player, a trumpetist, a drummer, only to name a few ! Musically speaking, this is purely the French School of Eighties-like instrumental jazz-rock, somewhere around SIXUN or UZEB (French speaking Canadians), with a well affirmed personality however. Moreover, our man is a Progressive rock connoisseur, claiming influences of YES, KANSAS and PINK FLOYD. (Musea)For further info visit one of the following websites: My Space.

Despite its name, Genco Puro & Co. is not a group, but a solo artist, real name being Riccardo Pirolli. Credited with name shortened to Riccardo Rolli he played guitar on Franco Battiato's first album "Fetus", and was in turn helped by Battiato for the release of the "Area di servizio" album back in 1972. The album is mainly acoustic, based on piano and guitars, with Battiato singing in the best two tracks: "Giorno d'estate" and "Nebbia". Another interesting track was written by Bruno "Red" Canzian (from Capsicum Red fame and later Pooh member).

ACROSS THE LINE
PROGROCK RECORDS ECD7567 - USA, 2008 |
|
A chance meeting of artists in 2004 on an internet message board brought together Ronald Wahle of the Netherlands with Chris Brown of Tennessee. What spawned from that meeting is the highly evolved progressive rock duo, GHOST CIRCUS. In 2008, GHOST CIRCUS returned with the release of their second album, 'Across the Line", a concept album following one man's path from death to the hereafter; a ghost story from a unique perspective. Significant equipment upgrades to both studios has allowed for a wider and more accurate expression of the duos' unusual musical vision. 'Across the Line' proves that GHOST CIRCUS has melded into a cohesive blend of the eclectic talents of Chris Brown and Ronald Wahle.

THE CHEERFUL INSANITY OF…
ECLECTIC DISCS ECD7141 - UK, 1968 |

This great album is where it all began for the King Crimson stalwarts and for a long time was an expensive out of print collector’s item. Excellent late 60's psychedelic pop, sometimes similar to the early Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, but with a jazzy tinge. Fripp's guitar is already in top form and shows the shapes of things to come in '69 when he and Mike Giles added some guys named Lake and McDonald and became, we all know who. 'Python-esque' and very, very English. This welcome remastered reissue comes with bonus tracks and enhanced artwork and should appeal to all lovers of eccentric late 60’s psychedelia.

3000 MILES AWAY
MELLOW RECORDS ECD4890 - FRANCE, 1977 |
|
Very good electro-prog originally from the French Pole label stable, and featuring guest Jean-Louis Rizet from Pole's 'Inside the Dream' and the Besombes-Rizet album. Not as out-there as those records, being more 'normally' progressive rock, but still of some experimental interest. Note that the recent and long-awaited CD reissue on Mellow wasn't done with much care, and there are some flaws presumably from vinyl pops on the disc, as well as lack of any reissue liner notes. DARKLUBING AT TAVASTIA
MELLOW RECORDS ECD4903 - FINLAND, 2005 |
|
This live album from the Finnish band GROOVECTOR was released between their first and second studio albums. We get over 74 minutes of music from two different shows. The first 4 tracks were recorded in Helinski in 2001,while the last 3 tracks were recorded live in the same place about a year later. The second show was missing their bass player.so the keyboardist played some bass along with his keys. The music from the second show doesn't sound as good as the first one in my opinion. The music itself is a blend of symphonic and jazz, with symphonic being the more prominant of the two.Actually it would be their second studio album where the jazz flavour really came out fully. The band they seem to get compared to most often(on their debut, and this live album) is CAMEL.Unlike their instrumental debut record this live album has plenty of vocals. SPRINGTIDES
MELLOW RECORDS ECD6898 - ITALY, 2005 |
|
I only knew this Italian band by name but they surprised me very positively with this compilation CD with songs recorded between 1992 and 2002. The musical brainchild is multi- instrumentalist Fabio Zuffanti, he mentions in the booklet: "These songs are taken by different kind of supports (tapes, CD, DAT, etc.) and the sound quality is not ever very good but I hope you can like them becasue in these songs you can find the roots of the Hostsonaten works in this 10 years, thanks to you all!". Indeed, especially on the first track the recording quality is at the level of a bootleg but in general the sound is decent, absolute not disturbing (to me). The first three songs "Ace of sunlight", "Starfields" and "Seascape" sound mellow featuring fine guitar and some saxophone and Mellotron. The English vocals are mediocre, if you are Italian, please sing your wonderful native language! Then the next lush progrock tracks "Season of Eve" (a bit bombastic mid-tempo piece with irritating computer drums but it only was meant to explain the musicians how to play the parts), "Aries" (very alternating featuring church-organ and a fiery, R&R inspired guitar solo), "Rainbow" (an exciting composition with a sitar intro and then dynamic and sumptuous progrock with duo-keyboards), "Morning" (a splendid track with wonderful flute samples, sensitive electric guitar, sparkling piano, impressive Mellotron waves and many shifting moods, this is Hostsonaten at their best!) and "Living stone and 1st reprise" (first a swinging rhythm with a strong bass sound and then a compelling climate delivering howling electric guitar and majestic choir-Mellotron and beautiful piano, GREAT!). The final two, new songs "The night the moon fell down" and "Crossing the bar" contain acoustic guitar and vocals and will appear one day on an entire acoustic album Fabio hopes. (E.Neuteboom)

VIETATO AI MINORI DI 18 ANNI
VM 2000 ELP0462 - ITALY, 1973 |
|
| This is Jumbo’s third and last recording in the 70s; “Vietato ai Minori di 18” is also their most accomplished effort, an outstanding specimen of the harder side of Italian symphonic prog. As in their preceding release “DNA”, this album is pretty much based upon a mixture of folkish sensitiveness and blues-rock fiery approach, with an amalgam of extended jamming and multicolored compositions providing the progressive essence to the band’s musical style. The overall sound is not as rough as in “DNA”, but nevertheless, the band sounds stronger, somewhat heavier. What happens here is that the augmented energy has been cleverly recycled through an air of sophistication brought by a more diverse instrumentation: mellotron and synths (Franco Battiato guests on VCS 3 in some numbers) are added in the mix, together with the sixtro - a Renaissance string instrument -, and some extra percussion. The compositions are more complex, too, so the level of symphonic bombast feels quite impressive...Fella’s lead voice remains as harsh as always, but thanks to the amplified sophistication in the arrangements and instrumentation, it doesn’t feel as overwhelming as before. (C.Inca Mendoza Loyola) Forget the expensive and rare original edition and grab this exactly reproduced 180 gr. vinyl reissue as fast as you can.

THE JUNIORS STORY
MELLOW RECORDS ECD7493 - ITALY, 2008 |
|
The name The Juniors (or Gli Juniors) appears on many records released in the 60's and 70's, this was a group from Vercelli which backed singer Gianni Pettenati, and that also had a short own career releasing an LP and a few singles for the City and CGO (same as Exploit, Macchie Rosse and Vocals) labels...The LP The Juniors Story was issued around 1971 and contains some progressive influences, particularly in the nice Break of lease, a track of over 8 minutes. In the rest of the album the band's sound is halfway between Procol Harum and brass rock groups like Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears, with some Italian songs, while most of them were sung in English. THE CIRCLE OF MADNESS

Unicorn Records is proud to announce the return of Canadian Progressive rock band KAOS MOON and the release of the brand new studio album “The Circle of Madness”. KAOS MOON had made a nice incursion in the progressive world in the 90’s with their album “After the Storm”. But then Kaos Moon’s leader Bernard Ouellette who also sang on the first Visible Wind recording, went on to work and create his recording studio Amadeus. Bernard Ouellette and UNICORN RECORDS’ Michel St-Pere met about 2 years ago at a Hamadryad/Visible Wind concert in Montreal and from then on started to talk about the release of a new Kaos Moon CD. Kaos Moon finished their CD a few months ago at AMADEUS Studio and the album was then mastered by Richard Addison at Trillium Sound Studios.

A WORD IN YOUR EYE
GIANT ELECTRIC PEA ECD5749 - UK, 2002 |
|
Twenty five years ago -more or less- a group of guys named Mike Holmes, Peter Nicholls y Nial Hayden met themselves in a queue for Genesis tickets. These guys decide to form a band which was to be called The Giln. Later on they changed the name to The Lens and, after some lineup changes, came a new member who changed entirely the concept and sound of the band: Martin Orford. Finally Martin and Mike decided to give up that spacey music they played (and as we´ll see they didn´t do it very well) and create a band which was to be called IQ..To be sincere "A word in your eye" only has documentable value for those who want to know the musical roots of one of the most important bands in the history of progressive music. There are four great tracks and some gleams here and there, but the rest of the songs were composed by very young musicians who, in those times, had to mature. (progvisions.i12.com)

Dave Edmunds' importance in the history of welsh rock music cannot be understated. In the 70's he became an icon recording for led zeppelin's swan song label and working with George Harrison. Edmunds' recording career began with the trio love sculpture, revealing Edmunds to be a guitar hero of extreme prowess. After a first single released under the name the human beans the band became love sculpture and recorded "blues helping", a classic album of blues rock for EMI'S Parlophone label.

MADRUGADA (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7307 - ITALY, 1974 |
|
An italian prog classic album from 1974, seven tracks, some of which written by Roberto Vecchioni (a singer-songwriter that's still very popular nowadays) and Mauro Paoluzzi. The first side shows some influences of a West Coast styled sound, with multivocal parts. The second side contains the long "Mandrax", led by Gianfranco Pinto's keyboards, that's probably the best album track with strong hints of canterbury sound (Caravan). Except for a limited use of acoustic guitar on "Uomo blu" the band didn't use guitars and their sound was strongly based on keyboards and richly arranged vocal parts.

INCASTRO (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7308 - ITALY, 1977 |
|
Second album by Madrugada, this time the trio was joined by some guest musicians like Lucio Fabbri on violin (from Piazza delle Erbe and later PFM) and Luciano Ninzatti on guitar (from Eugenio Finardi's band Crisalide). With a much better production and sound, this can be considered the best of their two albums, with long tracks like the opening "Romanzen" or "Aragon" showing a very good composition quality. Another nice song is "È triste il vento", that had previously been played by another group from Bergamo that had a close connection with Madrugada, Perdio. Like in the first album there are some odd different-styled tracks, like the folky "Noter de Berghem" and the silly "Katmandu" (that was also released on a single with "È triste il vento", to no success), but "Incastro" can surely be appreciated by progressive music fans.

K.A
SEVENTH RECORDS ECD6423 - FRANCE, 2004 |
|
After 20 years of evading the point Christian Vander has finally deigned to the return to the masterwork style which brought us all to his door in the first place. With our tongues hanging out. Of all the many noble attempts of the prog rockers to create a grand compositional style which blended elements from classical music with rock, none, in my view, ever reached the intensity, complexity and raw savage excitement of the great Magma masterworks such as M.D.K, Kohntarkosz, Theusz Hamtaahk, etc… Now it’s one thing to rest on your laurels and quite another to come back after such a great amount of time and to try and completely re-capture the original essence of your art. So many come backs have turned into let-downs ; and thus it is with some trepidation that I approached listening to K.A. I had seen many of the great Magma line-ups of the seventies performing these classics live. So the other question in my mind was : could the present band do it ? All of you out there reading this will be delirious to know that it is almost as if time stood still. Of course K.A itself was composed 30 years ago and is the missing link between MDK and Kohntarkosz but that is hardly the point. K.A is the real thing. The hypnotic tension, the explosive climaxes, the fantastic pyrotechnic drumming, the massive and intricate vocal arrangements, the gut-wrenching bass lines and the classical pomposity fused with almost jungle-strength R n’ B - all the hallmarks of Christian Vander’s special genius are found here intact. I have nothing further to say except that we got lucky. Buy it! (Nick Franks)

IL GABBIANO JONATHAN (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7553 - ITALY, 1987 |
|
In 1987 Rodolfo Maltese (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso) recorded this concept album dedicated to “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” a novel written by Richard Bach about a seagull learning about life and flight. Together with Rodolfo in this CD we can listen to a unique series of guest stars: Walter Martino (Ritratto di Dorian Gray, Reale Accademia di Musica, Goblin), Vittorio Nocenzi (Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso), Riccado Cocciante and many others. It is a pity that it has been never released because “Il Gabbiano Jonathan” is a wonderful record, mainly instrumental and of course focused on Rodolfo’s great guitar playing. You can find the first ethnical Mediterranean sounds that became typical for Indaco, some laid back and high class Italian jazz-rock and some more epic and guitar-solo focused tracks. All in all it is an important missing link and a must have for fans of Indaco and Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. The album is available as a beautiful vinyl replica CD.

BE GOOD TO YOURSELF AT LEAST ONCE A DAY
ESOTERIC RECORDINGS ECD5326 - UK, 1972 |
|
Characteristic traits of all 4 compositions on the album are long, improvisational-sounding jams; with psychedelic licks from the guitars going back and forth, as well as some nice underscoring by the keyboards - and vice versa. And The Manband really excel at these kind of tunes - sounding pretty much like they were recorded live in studio, the long instrumental parts are tight and always evolving; always adding elements or adding slight changes to the textures keeping the song interesting to listen to. In general style, the guys are influenced by country rock quite a lot; while on the last track they use blues rock as the foundation for their explorations. Fans of improvisational rock with psychedelic leanings should enjoy this one. (Windhawk)

L'ATTENZIONE DEBOLE
MELLOW RECORDS ECD6069 - ITALY, 2004 |
|
Mary Newsletter's fourth album is a very fresh take on the modern space rock album. The true Italian spirit of adventure and humor can be found in this eclectic mix of rock, space, psych, pop, and electronica...They list their influences as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Quicksilver Messenger Service and their guitar sound could be compared to Mark Knofler at times though it is often not as clean sounding as Dire Straits but with more of a spaced-out vibe...The band's myspace site claims they have disbanded but given the strength of this most recent release, we can only hope it is a temporary hiatus. Mary Newsletter is one of the most refreshing modern rock bands I've heard in some time, with a knack for combining good melodies with interesting and bizarre songwriting choices. Recommended to anyone who likes adventurous psych-pop or space-rock. Comes with a lyric booklet and nice artwork on the front and back covers. (progarchives)

DEATHCRUSH
DEATHLIKE SILENCE PROD. ECD7509 - NORWAY, 1987 |
|
Mayhem's first official release, the Deathcrush EP is one of those contradictory recordings which arguably vaulted an entire subgenre -- black metal -- towards the fulfillment of its destiny while seemingly setting back the overall state of heavy metal beyond its prehistoric past. The primary reason being its outlandishly raw, lo-fidelity sound quality, of course, which made even stylistic forefathers Venom (who had coined the "black metal" term a few years earlier under similarly unlikely circumstances, and whose "Witching Hour" Mayhem tears through here), resemble Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, by comparison. In fact, only the earliest efforts by Sweden's Bathory, and late-'80s recordings by Brazilian acts like Vulcano, Sarc fago, and Sepultura, plumbed comparable depths of extremity to lunatic Mayhem thrashers like "Chainsaw Gutsfuck," "Necrolust," "Pure Fucking Armageddon," and the title track. Yet, Deathcrush still found space within its 18, mostly frantic minutes, for a few surprising stylistic asides, like the foreboding marshal percussion of intro "Silvester Anfang" and the lonely keyboard chimes of "(Weird) Manheim," that already hint at black metal's broader aesthetic possibilities. As a result, Deathcrush anticipates the contradictory essence -- part simplicity defined, part progressive exploration -- of the emerging Norwegian black metal movement, and will therefore strike a primal chord of recognition with all devoted enthusiasts of the genre. MODAL SOUND TRIO (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7544 - ITALY, 2007 |
|
“MST” is an instrumental combo defined as a jazz-rock-prog band formed in Bergamo, Italy in 2002. As a matter of fact the trio made up of synth-guitar player Rudy Corbetta, drummer Vittorio Bonadei and 4/5 strings bass player Alberto Bigoni, aspires to overcome the above mentioned definition. The self-explanatory name of the group indicates a musical direction tied up to modal “fragrance” with a modern and relevant harmonic approach enriched with an unconventional use of MIDI devices. Miles Davis “Kind of Blue” and "Bitches of Brew” were and remain the pathways where the group musically walk and try to express its ideas. The variegated musical experiences take the tunes to a perfect blend of rock-fusion structures with jazz improvisations. Modal sound trio performs and records live without any kind of loop or overdubs wizardry. Ref.: DFA, Area, Baricentro, Dedalus.

WITHOUT EARTH/THE MOON
REV-OLA ECD7512 - USA, 1968/1969 |
|
One of the better interpretations on the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, The Moons' first album, (the first 12 or so cuts on this CD), "Without Earth", is a psych/pop masterpiece. Horns, sitars, tape effects and studio-trickery abound on the album. The vocals by Moore are very much in the "British" vein as well, sometimes sounding remarkably like John Lennon's. The song-writing is also very solid, as are the backing vocals and melodies; quite a few of the tracks have backing "oohs and aahs" that could've been placed right on Sgt. Pepper and fit right in. The bands 2nd self titled album included on this CD is a more trippy bluesy affair, and not nearly as exciting or meaningful as their wonderful first. (rateyouemusic) Five bonus tracks are included.

PER UNA SCULTURA DI CESCHIA (ITA. LTD. PAPERSLEEVE ED.)
AMS ECD7545 - ITALY, 1978 |
|
Nascita della Sfera was a group of session musicians assembled by a composer to record a single LP, in this case composer and keyboardist Carlo Barbiera dedicated a full album to the life and works of sculptor Luciano Ceschia (1926-1991). A rather original example of experimental electro-acoustic progressive style, mainly based on synth effects and acoustic guitars and often reminding some of Battiato's early works. Despite the presence of five singers in the line-up, the vocal parts are short, spoken rather than sung. Deluxe papersleeve reissue with complete band history, two booklets, recording taken from master tapes featuring 13 (!!!) bonus tracks. Ref: Battiato, Cacciapaglia, Stelle di Mario Schifano.

Second obscure trip for the band of Venice: slow, introspective sounds and words in their original reading. NIC-G AND THE MOGSY
MELLOW RECORDS ECD7494 - ITALY, 2007 |
|
“Nic-G and the Mogsy” is a musical project created in 2004 by Nicola Gardinale (guitarist and composer), who made three acclaimed albums with hard rock/ progressive band “A PIEDI NUDI” edited by Mellow records (A Piedi Nudi-1993; Creazione- 1995; Eclissi-1997) in the 90’s...Meeting Alessandro Zaia (bassist and arranger) and Massimiliano Ferrari (potent and unique voice from the already mentioned “A Piedi Nudi” first incarnation) proved to be important to Gardinale in the current project “Nic-G and the Mogsy” and his artistic development. With this group he was able to create the homonymous album recorded at Ugo Bolzoni’s “New Frontiers Recording Studio”, edited by Mellow Records...The album has ten original songs, the spirit of which is a conglomeration of various genres ( blues, rock, funky and pop). The work is innovative, vital and decisively unpredictable. For further info visit the Official Homepage or one of the following websites: Rate Your Music or My Space.
