ALBUM REVIEW
This Chicago-based group cut a handful of mid-'60's singles for ABC-Paramount as The Trolls before cutting this disc for Mercury's Smash subsidiary...About half of it is silly baroque-pop with goofy vocals, this is mixed with a handful of slower atmospheric pieces with queer vocals - the rest of the album is kinda cool hard-edged psych with a bit of a dark overtone to it as evidenced in tracks like the trippy "Werewolves And Witchbreath" (the album's highlight) and the freaked-out keyboard workout of "Mourning Of The Day" which also has truly weird vocals reminiscent of Napoleon XIV on "They're Coming To Take Me Away". Coincidentally, another track, "Professor Pott's Pornographic Projector", has weird vocals reminiscent of the New Vaudeville Band's "Winchester Cathedral". Another highlight is the album opener, a nice little fuzz-rocker with a slight taste of bubblegum called "Satin City News"... This album owes more to Sgt. Pepperthan it does to Surrealistic Pillow, but it does contain one psychedelic masterwork, "I've Only Myself to Blame". (rateyourmusic.com) buy_now
